Sedation dentistry is not only for patients who are anxious, but it is also for  regular patients who must undergo longer procedures such as cosmetic  dentistry or even to accomplish more in a single visit and avoid frequent  shorter visits, while the patient is at ease.

Types of Sedation

1. Nitrous Oxide: Nitrous oxide, also known as “laughing gas”, is a very valuable type of sedation which keeps the patient relaxed and comfortable during a dental procedure. Nitrous oxide works fast and effectively, and wears off quickly since it is a lighter form of sedation.

2. Oral or “Pill” Sedation: Oral sedation allows the patient to be comfortably sedated for dental treatment with the ingestion of just one small pill. Throughout the treatment, the patient may fall into a light sleep or remain entirely awake, and have little or no recollection of the treatment afterwards. Oral sedation works well for longer and more  complicated dental procedures. Side effects of the pill are rare. However, since the pill’s effects can last for a few hours, the patient  must be driven home at the end of the treatment.

3. Intravenous (IV) Conscious Sedation: IV Sedation, also known as  “twilight” or “sleep” dentistry, is administered and supervised by our  board certified anesthesiologist or medical doctor. Throughout the treatment, the patient will be in an extremely relaxed state and will be able to respond to doctor’s requests. This type of sedation works well  for nervous or anxious patients who do not want to remember any part of the procedure.

4. General Anesthesia: General anesthesia is administered by our board certified anesthesiologist or medical doctor. This type of sedation puts the patient “completely out” while being closely monitored. No needles are required, as the sedation drugs are given via intravenous and/or inhalation techniques. With general anesthesia, usually all of the  dental treatment required is completed in one visit.
